As we prepare to launch our new FirmFit sport bra collection, I was reminded of an article I recently read by Elizabeth Narins; it was all about the right fit sports bra, and how to get the most from one.
That’s something we put a lot of effort into when designing our active wear, the consideration of making sure our range is about performance as well as fashion is something us at Dans-ez care a lot for.
So, as we prepare for the photo shoot for our new collection on the tropical island of St Lucia here are a few tips on getting the most out of your bra!
Recently, I have read an article stating that over 87% of women wear the incorrect sports bra. Now, it doesn’t take a professional to understand that if sportswear does not support or fit nicely, then you are going left, rather than right. This is also stopping women from taking part in physical activity, you either will not work out, or will not enjoy it.
Here are some tips to ensure that you are wearing the right sports bra :
ONE
The band rides up, or you are using the tightest hook.
It is a sign that the bra is either too large, or stretched out over time. Even if everything is intact, it will not provide the support you need whilst exercising. The band of the bra does more work than the straps, so you need to make sure the band is right before anything else..
It should fit nice and snug, but not too tight that it is painful.
TWO
It is more than six months old.
Linking back to size, like all bras sports bras stretch out over time. Without argument, all bras should be replaced after four to six months depending on your frequency of wear and quality of care. To prolong the wear of your bra, hand wash, and then hang dry. Try not to use any machines as they can either cause shrinkage or simply just disintegrate the fabric altogether.
Not only will the shape be ruined, but the bra will lack in support and wear.
THREE
One word… Uniboob.
There is a reason sports bras have separate places for each breast.
Separating them allows air to circulate and encapsulates each breast for extra support, no matter what your cup size. A uniboob can also be a sign that your sports bra is too tight, and not offering the support you need.
FOUR
Same bra, different day.
A problem people continue to make is wearing the same bra no matter what activity you are doing. For example take wearing the same bra for yoga as you do to run; It’s like wearing a ballet slipper to run a marathon.
A sports bra for yoga or ballet can be a light, seamless number, but you’ll want a more supportive one (e.g… thicker, cushioned straps, moulded cups, and even underwire) for running and other rigorous activities.
FIVE
It costs less than £10..
While you can buy sports bras at most high-street stores or online for close to nothing, the price usually shows off the quality of the bra itself… Not good. A bra with no shape, wiring, and made of thin cotton are inherently less comfortable, supportive and flattering compared to a standard yet fairly priced sports bra. A cheap, poorly made bra may cost you more in the future when you are repairing the damage you have caused yourself, for that extra £10 off 10 years ago.
SIX
You have a cleavage that would put most push up bras to shame…
If your breasts are spilling over the top of your cups, the cups are too small for you. Also, if you do a downward facing dog, and instead of dog you are facing a nip slip, the cup sizes are too small. According to statistics this is the most common mistake with sports bras women make.
Instead of ensuring your boobs look good, opt for comfort… There are sports bras out there that offer support for any cup size, so stop being shy.
SEVEN
Post-workout-pain.
If your boobs are hurting you after you have worked out, this is a result of a lack of support. Movement means pain which means you are wearing the wrong bra.
I hope I helped most of you gain some sense in what is right and wrong in the sports bra world.. Check out our website for our endless range of sports bras, that provide support for all cup sizes.
Also, keep your eyes peeled for the new range soon to be launched.
